SUB-THEMES

  1. Cities and Citizenship: In 2050 two thirds of humankind are expected to live in cities. How can we approach upcoming technological, social, and ecological challenges in city planning and urban development? How do we enable community and citizenship to shape sustainable living in a fair and equal manner?
  2. Climate Crisis as THE Grand Challenge: “Earth for All” – the new report to the Club of Rome is positioned as survival guide for humanity. How can we understand and explain barriers of change and promote new ideas with the help of Public Value thinking? Which new technological, activist, educational or other ideas aligned with Public Value are currently at the horizon impacting this grand challenge?
  3. Further grand challenges: The list of grand challenges and wicked problems is long. Where does a public value lens help to shape thinking and acting to navigate through different areas?
  4. Public Value theory: There is no unified field of public value theorizing, but rather an interdisciplinary landscape of ideas on how to address the relationship between the individual and the collective, using notions of common good, general interest or public good. What is the next frontier of public value theory?
  5. Public Value start-ups: Entrepreneurial activity is an important vehicle for innovation. In this track we aim to highlight, support, and connect entrepreneurial activities – starting with already elaborate business models up to established start-ups. Founders and their teams will be able to connect to a vivid international and local Lisbon ecosystem. Moreover, they will have a chance to receive feedback on how to direct their business model towards public value creation regarding strategy, structure and people from established entrepreneurs and academics. For this track you are requested to apply with a pitch deck of your venture, outlining how you relate to Public Value.
